A subordinate body of the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Energy Crisis was told on Monday that load shedding is expected to get worse during the summers.

The meeting of the subordinate body was held in the Parliament House under the chairmanship of its convener, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. In the meeting, it was told that the PSO had reduced the supply of furnace oil to the power sector by 20,000 tonnes. At present, PSO supplied only 6,000 tonnes of furnace oil to the power sector.

The reduction in the supply of furnace oil had given way to a shortfall of 4,000 Megawatts, while the demand of power sector with reference to furnace oil was 18,000 tonnes daily. Despite the provision of Rs 10 billion to PSO, the situation was worsening, the meeting was told.

Furthermore, the meeting was told that the power-crisis would not end if the private sector was not allowed to generate electricity.

Abbasi said that the Ministry of Water and Power had been asked not to give subsidy on electricity to the elite class.

Abbasi further stated that targeted subsidy should be provided with reference to electricity and work to manage it was underway.

He observed that bureaucrats and parliamentarians should not be provided the subsidy and political courage was needed to deal with it.

Moreover, Abbasi proposed that the price of electricity should be increased for those who used it excessively.
