US embassy car kills one person, injures another

A man died on Friday while another sustained severe injuries in a collision with a US embassy vehicle.

According to reports, US diplomat Lupersio Perez was driving the car at a high speed when it hit a motorcycle in the Secretariat Police Station area of Islamabad. As a result, the motorcyclists were injured badly.

Eyewitnesses added, at the time of the accident two men, one at the handle bar and the other on the pillion, were riding the motorcycle.

According to sources, the bikers identified as Shozab Raza and Muzammil Shah, were employees of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and were going home after work at the Parliament Lodges when the accident took place.

Muzammil Shah breathed his last in the emergency room of Poly Clinic, however Shozab Raza was said to be out of danger. Following the roadside mishap the US diplomat was also hospitalised for reportedly feeling too sick to stay in the stationhouse.

According to reports, the car involved in the accident has been impounded.

A case was registered against the US diplomat under section 302. However, he was released on bail.

Muzzamil Shah, who was an employee of CDA for the last six years, is survived by a window and a seven-year-old daughter.

Further investigation was underway.

In the aftermath of the accident, US embassy in a statement said that it was ready to address the financial needs of the affected men.

“We understand that the second man is currently receiving medical treatment,” the statement said, adding the US embassy employee also sustained minor injuries, was treated, and released.

“The US embassy wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.  We have and will continue to cooperate fully with the appropriate Pakistani authorities on the investigation, and are working through our local insurance company to address financial questions or concerns.  We express our deepest regret for this terrible accident,” the statement said.
