Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran (TMQ) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri has decided not to file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision to dispose of his plea without hearing. The firebrand scholar had filed a constitutional petition in the apex court seeking reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ahead of general elections.
The SC threw out his petition on the grounds that he could neither prove his bona fide intention nor his locus standi. The court also said Qadri’s petition did not fall under Article 184 of the constitution, therefore, the matter should be taken up at some other forum. On Thursday, the TMQ chief addressed a press conference, announcing that he would not challenge the court decision. “I went to the court in the capacity of a common citizen, only to prove that the existing ECP is illegal and unconstitutional…The only thing I objected on is attitude of the court, but still I respect the Supreme Court and will continue to strive for the bright future of Pakistan and Pakistanis,” the TMQ chief said. Qadri said he could not fall prey to emotions and give up his Canadian nationality. “I respect the Supreme Court’s decision but if I travel with a Pakistani passport then I will have to wait for months to get any visa,” Qadri was quoted as telling the media while referring to the apex court’s objection over his dual nationality.
