President Asif Ali Zardari said on Wednesday said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has denied his request for a visit at his Raiwind residence.

The President said that he wanted to visit the Sharif brothers to condole death of Abbas Sharif. The President said that he understood that the Sharif’s were not in the best of terms with him, but, alleged that the Sharif’s portray political immaturity sometimes. Zardari said that the Sharif’s owe their lives to him as he had saved them from hanging at the hands of Pervez Musharraf.
President Zardari maintained that he became ‘friends’ with Nawaz after the latter was imprisoned by Musharraf following the 1999 coup. He claimed that at the time, Musharraf had been pressuring Justice Rehmat Hussain Jafri to severely punish Nawaz. Zardari said that “I had some acquaintance with Justice Jafri, and when I heard Musharraf was pressuring him into punishing Nawaz, I advised him to settle the case only on merit. ”

President Zardari said that Nawaz had intended to boycott the 2008 elections but he had convinced him to contest and PML-N got votes only because it marketed its reconciliation with late Benazir Bhutto.
