Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights took serious notice of the enforced disappearance of citizens and directed the Ministry of Defence to submit a report in the next meeting.
In a committee meeting held under the chairmanship of Senator Afrasiab Khattak, the members were informed that the defence ministry had not received any report from intelligence agencies which was a major hurdle for them.
The officials of the ministry ensured that they would receive the required information by February 20 and would present a detailed report in the next meeting of the committee.
On the issue of removing unnecessary check posts from the vicinity of the federal capital which was causing inconvenience to the general public, Islamabad Inspector General Bani Ameeen apprised the committee that since 2008 they had established 179 police check posts in the city and these check posts played a major role in controlling the law and order in the city.
“Various crimes including car snatching and bomb blasts had been reduced manifolds. Moreover, there has been no bomb blast in the city after 2011,” he said.
He further said currently only 74 check posts were functioning in the city and the remaining pickets had been removed according to the wishes of the general public.
The committee also ordered Capital Development Authority to ensure provision of basic facilities including toilets, umbrellas at all the pickets for the on-duty police official who rendered their duties day and night despite the harsh weather conditions.
The committee also directed to arrest an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who had been a declared absconder in case No. 367 regarding the murder of an accused at I-9 police station due to police torture.
On the application of Nazir Masih, regarding illegal occupation of his plot at village Sohan district of the federal capital, the committee directed Islamabad Police to take immediate action.
In response, Islamabad IG Bani Amin ensured that the matter would be resolved soon and the applicant would be facilitated according to law.
