A senior lawyer belonging to the Shia community was shot dead in the Gulbahar area of Peshawar early on Friday. Malik Jarrar, a senior advocate was shot dead by unidentified men when he was dropping his children at school in the morning. Soon after the assassination contingents of police rushed to the site and shifted the body to hospital. The incident caused unrest amongst the people and most of them were confined to homes.
Expressing severe resentment over the assassination, lawyers boycotted court proceedings and staged a sit-in front outside the Governor’s House. No one has claimed responsibility for the killing so far, but officials have termed it an act of sectarian violence.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said Jarrar’s assassination was connected to sectarian violence in the province. The minister alleged that certain elements were bent upon creating a Quetta-like situation in Peshawar. In this regard, Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti had recently convened elders from both sides and they had unanimously agreed to remain peaceful and patient towards each others. Meanwhile, lawyers community on a call by Peshawar High Court Bar Association and Peshawar Bar association boycotted proceeding of courts and staged a sit-in outside the Governor’s House.
Terrorist killings in Pakistan whether it is against Shias or Sunnis, should be condemned by all walks of life. Unfortunately it is just seen as another episode. When will there be a justice. Where is Chief Justice who claims to be master of justice in Pakistan???Shame on all Pakistani leaders..
