Pakistan People’s Party Senator Aitzaz Ahsan on Friday said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is transgressing from its prerogatives, and it requires reforms. Talking to reporters outside the Supreme Court, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan said that it is wrong on part of the ECP to advise the government to do legislation. To a question, he said that Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Dr Tahirul Qadri has got the right to move the Supreme Court, but its hearings could defer the upcoming general elections. The PPP lawmaker claimed that he did not pursue hundreds of cases in order to save Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry from being controversial, as the CJP has been his client in certain cases. “Had I done this, people would have pointed fingers at the chief justice of Pakistan,” he added. From March 2007 until now, he had appeared before the CJP in only two cases, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto reference case and contempt of court case, against former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani, Aitzaz Ahsan observed. “If Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry summons him on February 20, then he will decide whether or not to do so, after consultation with his client,” Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan concluded.
