Wasim Sajjad, the federation’s lawyer in the contempt of court case related to the dual offices of President Asif Ali Zardari, said on Thursday that he had never stated that Zardari would give up the presidency. Talking to journalists, Sajjad claimed that his statement about Zardari had been twisted. “I have always been saying that the president does not hold any political office,” he added. He said that he had told the court that the ruling party, the Pakistan People’s Party-Parliamentarians (PPPP), had its own system under which Amin Faheem heads the party, which has been registered with the Election Commission. The elections of the abovementioned party are held as per rules and regulations of the Election Commission, he said, adding, “The People’s Party which is headed by President Zardari is practically dysfunctional.” He further said that the general elections would be held on time, and that the chief election commissioner had been elected for a five-year term.
