Qadri scrapes ECP’s legitimacy

Tehrik-i-Minhajul Quran (TMQ) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri on Thursday submitted a petition in the Supreme Court of Pakistan seeking reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in accordance with article 213 of the constitution.

Talking to media persons outside the court’s premises Qadri alleged that the existing ECP was formed unconstitutionally and declared it as illegal. He further said that according to Article 213 of the Constitution the names of three nominations from each province should have been suggested but the procedure was not followed. Qadri added that he had personally appeared in the Supreme Court to submit the petition and that he would argue the case himself.

Earlier on Wednesday Tehrik-i-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan in cohorts with Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehrik and called for a powerful Election Commission and an impartial caretaker government to ensure free and fair elections.

The recent developments have been severely criticised by the main opposition party Pakistan Muslim league – Nawaz (PML-N). It shall be mentioned the government on January 27 had rejected Qadri’s demands for reconstituting of the Election Commission and freezing discretionary and development funds. NNI
