Sindh Information Minister and Deputy Information Secretary of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Sharjeel Inam Memon, in a statement said that the sit-in being observed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Islamabad the other day has become a public joke because of the very poor show and the ground for which they were protesting in front of the parliament. He said that political observers had failed to understand the logic of their sit-in because the incumbent Chief Election Commissioner was the nominee of the PML-N which was accepted by the PPP in clear manifestation of the spirit of democratic values towards their political opponents when they put forward the proposal. He further said that the democratic credentials of PML-N had been unfortunately tarnished due to their resorting to the politics of dharna in the presence of elected parliament which was the highest elected forum to discuss and resolve the issues of national importance in accordance with the best democratic practices. He said that the PPP and the PML-N were committed to hold free, fair and impartial elections in the country because they firmly believed that the forthcoming elections were critical for the future of democracy, the country and for the people of Pakistan. Their recent hue and cry was not compatible with the democratic process, he added. Sharjeel also pointed out that the PPP had been badly hurt by electoral manipulations in the past meant to favour the anti-democratic and anti-PPP forces, adding that the PPP would not allow the repetition of such illegal, unconstitutional and immoral practices which deprived the people and the PPP from their legitimate right of representing the people and empowering them.
