Special committee of the National Assembly on delay in flights has directed Pakistan International Airline (PIA) to furnish a report regarding delay in all flights.
At a meeting with minister of state for Information Sumsam Ali Bukhari in the Chair‚ the Committee said that causes into grounding of PIA aircraft‚ their defective operations and existing strength of fleet besides proposed restructuring of the airline must also be provided. The committee was briefed by the Managing Director‚ PIA regarding causes of delay and grounding of PIA aircraft. He informed the committee that PIA was currently operating a fleet of 38 aircrafts.
Almost half PIA fleet is grounded, because instead of a choice of over 100 vendors located all over national airline network, former MD Nadeem Yusafzai chose an unknown supplier based in Dubai, who could not ensure propmpt delivery of parts at available market rates. In 2006, a similar deal was done and net result was PIA operations to EU were suspended in 2007. Airline has been crippled by the corrupt executives and cronies.
