The performance of female parliamentarians has proved to be better than their male counterparts’ in terms of business, questioning and legislation, while the negative portrayal of women in the media is archaic, said prominent journalists during a panel discussion.
The panel discussion titled “Portrayal of Women’s Leadership in Media” was held on the third day of a training workshop on ‘common ground media’ for 30 producers and presenters from 30 radio stations at a district and provincial level, by the Uks Research Centre in collaboration with Search for Common Ground (SFCG).
The training incorporated various techniques to sensitise and raise awareness amongst participants on gender issues, and engaged them in solution-oriented interaction with the audience via media.
Male and female radio broadcasters from Radio Pakistan and private FM stations from 26 districts including Gilgit-Baltistan and FATA, participated in the training. Leading trainers and subject specialists provided thematic training and encouraged capacity building for women and gender issues.
Raza Rumi, a prominent journalist, said, “Media should not glorify negative elements and should focus on positive segments of our society. There is a strong need for media regulation and implementation, while self-regulation of media is equally important.
The government needs to end institutional monopoly in media.”
