Sixteen-year-old Christian Garin produced an assured display to move into the second round of the VTR Open in Vina del Mar, Chile. The world number 920 showed no signs of nerves on his ATP Tour debut in front of his home crowd and claimed a 6-3 6-4 win over Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic. Garin faced just two break points and wrapped up the win after 84 minutes to seal a clash with French third seed Jeremy Chardy. Federico Delbonis set up a meeting with top seed Rafael Nadal after battling back to see off fellow Argentine Guido Pella 2-6 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/1). Nadal made his return to competitive tennis on Tuesday after eight months out through injury and illness when he partnered Juan Monaco to a straight sets doubles victory over second seeds Frantisek Cermak and Lukas Dlouhy. Eighth seed Carlos Berlocq was in imperious form as he blitzed past Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov 6-2 6-1, while former world number five Tommy Robredo eased to a 6-2 6-2 win over Spanish compatriot Pere Riba. Albert Montanes edged out Nicolas Massu 6-7 (6/8) 6-3 6-4, while there were also wins for Horacio Zeballos and Guillaume Rufin.
