Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will commute to and from his office on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) after its inauguration on February 10 to promote use of public transport, Pakistan Today has learnt.
Sources on good authority revealed that the decision has been taken to make the multibillion rupees BRTS project “successful”. The step is an attempt to make travelling on the public transport popular among the people. According to details, the CM will go to his office in the Punjab Civil Secretariat for one week using the newly launched articulated buses along with the people.
However, a lot of questions are being asked about other senior officials not following in the footsteps of the provincial chief executive. The BRTS passes directly in front of the Punjab Civil Secretariat, but the question on whether the secretaries and other top officials prefer leaving their cars and travel on the public transport is still hangs in the balance.
Punjab government’s spokesperson Senator Pervaiz Rasheed said the chief minister will use the BRTS not only for a week but will keep commuting on it of and on. He said the chief minister using public transport is a message for other officials also to leave behind cars and prefer public transport. “We cannot make it a law restricting someone from using cars, as this is not a communist country. However the CM has decided this positive step to make this popular among the masses,” he added.
