Superior courts’ judges get 20% raise in salaries, allowance

Acting on the advice of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, President Asif Ali Zardari, has approved a 20 percent increase in the salaries as well as in the judicial allowance of the judges of superior courts. According to the Presidential Order issued under the Fifth Schedule of the constitution, the salary of the chief justice of Pakistan has been increased from Rs 448,221 per month to Rs 537,865 while the salary of a Supreme Court judge has been increased from Rs 423,414 to Rs 508,097/. Their judicial allowance has been increased from Rs 196,219 to Rs 235,463. The salary of chief justice of high court has been increased from Rs 425,426 to Rs 498,509 while the salary of other judges of high courts has been raised from Rs 399,447 to 479,336 while their judicial allowance has been increased to Rs 188,370. The salaries as well as superior judicial allowances of the judges of the superior courts had been enhanced by 50 percent with effect from July 1, 2010 when this relief was allowed to the civil servants of Pakistan. Likewise, civil servants were granted an increase in their ad-hoc relief allowance by 15 percent of the basic pay with effect from July 1, 2011. Accordingly, the salaries as well as increased superior court judicial allowance of the judges of the superior courts were also raised by 15 percent. The government granted another ad-hoc relief allowance of 20 percent of the basic pay to all the civil employees as well as employees of the armed forces. The expenditure so incurred with the increase in salaries would be met from within the sanctioned budget of the respective courts.
