Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Javaid Laghari has written a letter to National Assembly Standing Committee on Education and Training Chairman Rohale Asghar and apprised him about reservations expressed by university vice chancellors (VCs) over the Private Members HEC Amendment Bill.
Laghari informed the committee that VCs representing 137 universities met on Wednesday and categorically rejected the proposed bill.
Laghari said that the VCs were of the view that the proposed bill would threaten the autonomy of the HEC as well as universities. Achievements that had been made over the last 10 years would not only come to a stop but would also be reversed, they said. They proposed a dialogue between members of the parliamentary standing committees and various stakeholders.
Laghari stated that the VCs had convened a meeting on February 5 in Islamabad, and had requested a meeting with the committee.

  1. Much too passive a protest. Chairman HEC communicates with Ruhail Asghar. If the amendment does not suit the HEC , the protesters viz 150 universities should take to the streets or perform a sit in. It is impossible to sway the parliamentarians in a civilized manner. When will we learn?
