The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday sought progress report from Attorney General Irfan Qadir on February 13 with regard to the implementation of court’s orders on electoral reforms.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry heard the case regarding the implementation of court’s June 2012 order on electoral reforms.
The attorney general informed the court that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had sent its recommendations to the Law Ministry, while petitioner’s recommendations had also been received. He added that the Law Ministry was considering recommending legislation in the light of the recommendations.
The chief justice asked Qadir not to leave the job for the Law Ministry alone, adding that the attorney general should talk to high-ups for early formulation of laws. “The court understands that the legislation will take time,” the chief justice remarked.
Justice Chaudhry said that the ECP had already issued a code of conduct for the elections, adding that the electoral process had begun in the country. “There should not be any delay in elections on the pretext of legislation,” the chief justice said. The court later adjourned the hearing until February 13 while directing the attorney general to present a progress report in the next hearing.
Courts are not directing to pass effective legislation on terrorism, hate speech etc., It is not interested in economic reforms but interested in electoral reforms. This is called misplaced priories.
