The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday assured the opposition parties staging a sit-in protest outside the ECP Sindh office that it would re-verify voters’ lists, and that army personnel would accompany the ECP staff during the door-to-door verification process.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Army has set up an Electoral Vote Verification Coordination Cell at the ECP Sindh office to address the reservations of political parties and general public about the verification process.

These decisions were made in a meeting between Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim and leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan Tehreek-e-InsafI, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl, JUI-Sami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan, Awami Tehreek and Sindh United Party, who had staged a sit-in demonstration outside the ECP office for last two days.

A participant of the meeting told Pakistan Today that the ECP had assured the parties that the army would accompany the verifiers in their door-to-door work.
He said the verification already done would be re-checked for irregularities, if any. The re-verification would be conducted randomly and “5 to 10 percent of the verified voters’ lists would be rechecked in areas to be pointed out by the political parties.
