Gulberg’s famous restaurant, Coffee Tea and Company (CTC) caught fire at 8:30 am on Thursday due to gas leakage from a cylinder.
The popular restaurant is owned by Miss Shahbana who belongs to Faisalabad. As soon as the fire became visible, locals informed Rescue 1122. When the rescue team reached the spot, the blaze had spread to most parts of the shop. It took an hour’s effort to control the fire however goods worth hundreds of thousands of rupees were damaged due to the fire.
A security guard from a nearby shop said the fire was caused by gas leakage from a cylinder. “The whole building was full of gas. A burst of high voltage caused short circuiting causing the fire to spread. There was no explosion because the cylinder was empty,” he said. According to sources, maintenance work had been due at CTC for a long time. The fire was initiated on the second floor and there were no signs of damage on the first floor. The owner has closed the shop for a few days during which the damaged portion would be reconstructed. Workers at the shop said the fire was caused by short circuiting and the blaze went out of control because of abundance of clothes inside the building. A student from Resource Academia, who witnessed the fire, said the windows on the second floor had been covered with clothes, perhaps to hide the fire from onlookers.
