Annemarie Schimmel remembered

The Annemarie Schimmel Haus, associated with the Goethe Institute, paid tribute to Annemarie Schimmel on the occasion of her 10th death anniversary at Lahore on Thursday. Nasira Iqbal, Dr Mira Phailbus and Narmeen Hamid were present in the event and gave an introduction about Annemarie-Schimmel and her relation with Pakistan. According to Nasira Iqbal; Professor Annemarie Schimmel was a well known and very influential German Orientalist and scholar, who wrote extensively on Islam and Sufism. She was one of the world’s foremost experts on Islamic studies, Persian poetry and Sufism. She added that; she composed hundreds of articles and books on Islamic history, art, theology, poetry, calligraphy and mysticism, and also translated Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu and Sindhi poetry into German and English verse. She was unique, and outpaced both her illustrious contemporaries and her orientalist forebears. According to Narmeen Hamid; Annemarie Schimmel is a friend of the Pakistan and works closely with the people of Pakistan. She was the bridge between west and Pakistan. She wrote 50 books on the Islamic culture and done her PhD in the age of 19. She was very brilliant and worked for the promotion of local culture.
