Incidents of purse and mobile snatching have become a norm due to the insouciant attitude of local police officials in Arya Mohallah.
Residents of the colony and adjacent areas said that robbers roamed during the night and committed crimes with impunity. They said around two or three street crimes took place on a daily basis.
Shoaib Abid, a resident, said he had been walking home at 11pm when two men on a motorbike intercepted him. The robbers threatened him at gunpoint, took his possessions and drove away, he said.
In another incident, robbers stole cash and a mobile phone from Jamil Quraishi in Jinnah Colony, and shot his leg when he resisted.
Residents said that due to a lack of streetlights, purse and mobile phone snatching incidents had become common in the locality.
They asked local lawmakers and CPO Azhar Hameed Khokhar to take note of the hike in criminal activity and direct the police to initiate night patrolling.
