Measles situation under control: Salman Rafique

Special Assistant to Chief Minister for Health Khawaja Salman Rafique on Monday said that the measles epidemic in Punjab was not as bad as the situation in Sindh. Talking to journalists, he said that Punjab government had taken effective steps to ensure provision of necessary healthcare to citizens. He further said that steps had been taken to contain the spread of the disease. Moreover, Rafique said that that a mop-up campaign in the affected areas, in accordance with the guideline of World Health Organisation (WHO), was underway. He said that under this campaign, preventive vaccination was being carried out for children belonging to age groups of six months to ten years. He further said that routine immunisation was being made more effective to ensure the eradication of measles virus among the children. He said that as many as 1,476 measles cases had been reported during the current year in Punjab, whereas seven suspected deaths had occurred, one each at Gujranwala and Kasur, while five had been reported at Rajanpur.
