Punjab Governor Ahmad Mahmud said Bahawalpur province will be restored to eradicate a sense of deprivation, eliminate poverty and provide rights to the people of South Punjab while chairing a meeting of the core committee for restoration of Bahawalpur province on Saturday, at his residence.
Committee general secretary Dr Waseem Akhtar, spokesman Tabish Alvari and others attended the meeting. Members discussed the recommendations on restoration of Bahawalpur as a province presented during the meeting. The committee expressed satisfaction over the federal government’s role and said the National Assembly was working positively with regards to the matter. It was also decided in the meeting that new province would include Bahawalpur, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions. The committee thanked President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Raja Parvaiz Ashraf and all political parties over their countless efforts for creation of the new province.
Governor Mehmood should have a thinking shift; sitting in the palatial house in the lush area of Lahore people start to entertain weirded ideas. They may or may not need a psychiatrist but without looking at the new cost reducing administrative set up no new ventures of the sort shoul be undertaken.

Restoration of Bahawalpur province
There has to be some justification in making more Provinces. We cannot make provinces on ethnic grounds.
Going ahead with Seraiki province and ignoring the demand of Bahawalpur Province, can result in political Upheaval. If new province to be formed it should be the restoration of Bahawalpur province as it was a self-governed state with its own revenue generating mechanism. It was merged into West Pakistan when one unit was established. After the abolition of one unit, the Bahawalpur was not given its previous status as Province.
The issue of creating more provinces is very sensitive. The government has to be very careful as the consequences of such action can harm the country, but no one is interested in learning lessons from the past.
Any error in judgement at this time can prove disastrous for the country. It would be better if Bahawalpur is restored before the General Elections.
