The sale of graveyard land in the form of residential plots has sparked resentment among residents of Chakri Chahan, in the jurisdiction of Chountra Police Station. Land mafia had illegally occupied a lonely graveyard on Chakri Road and had started selling it in the form of residential plots.
“Our population is sprawling and now runs into thousands, this graveyard was not spacious enough to meet our town’s requirements, said Raja Farman, a resident of Chahan.
The land mafia has illegally occupied this graveyard and have started selling residential plots on it with the connivance of corrupt officials in the land department, he added.
“We tried our best to protect the graveyard, but we are weak and the land mafia, which is backed by influential people, is too strong, he added.
Residents have demanded immediate action by the Punjab government to protect the graveyard.
