LHC takes action against prison torture

The Lahore High Court took suo motu action over the death of a Kot Lakhpat Jail inmate who allegedly died of torture in custody. The Chief Justice Ata Muhammad Bandial asked the district and sessions judge to report the incident in detail.

According to sources, prisoner Allah Ditta was tortured by the jail officials after he could not manage to pay them money for using the mobile phone, prohibited in the premises.

Allah Ditta succumbed to injuries and breathed his last in the jail hospital. According to the jail sources, a medical report confirmed affliction of torture. On the other hand, jail authorities ascribed the death of the prisoner to cardiac arrest.

The LHC also has taken action on a couple’s suicide in Sheikhupura. Majeed and his wife Naila were depressed allegedly after being harassed by the local police who arrested the couple on charges of theft a few days ago and released them after thrashing. The following day the couple ended their lives taking poison. The Seikhupura session judge has been directed to submit the incident in detail within a week.

The Lahore district and sessions judge has also been asked to submit the report of a kidnap-cum-murder case in which a government teacher’s teenager son was killed.
