Federal ombudsman forms body to probe measles outbreak

Federal Ombudsman Salman Faruqui on Wednesday constituted a high-powered committee to probe into the alleged maladministration that caused an outbreak of measles across the country.
The committee comprises Adviser to Ombudsman Justice Muhammad Raza Khan, Honorary Adviser to Ombudsman Syed Anwar Mahmood and Ejaz Rahim. Faruqui has given the committee three weeks to complete its investigation and submit a report with recommendations for the future.
Faruqui has taken cognisance on his own motion under Article 9(1) of the Establishment of the Office of Wafaqi Mohtasib (Ombudsman) Order, 1983, in view of widely reported allegations of maladministration that caused loss of valuable lives due to an outbreak of measles in different parts of the country.
A team of eminent professionals including Dr Fazal-e-Hadi, Dr Huma Qureshi and Dr Birjees Mazhar Kazi has been co-opted as technical members of the committee to render expert assistance on the matter.
Faruqui has forwarded reports received from, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, MNA Dr Azra Pechuho, and Haleem Adil Sheikh regarding the outbreak. He has also advised the committee to interview affected families and officials on the subject.
