Environmentalists fear that the excessive use of polythene bags could severely damage the fragile eco-balance of the world as they take more than a hundred years to decompose and wreak havoc on the environment in the meantime. Intersections in every main city have been overflowing with these bags. Socialogists believe that littering would be slowly eliminated from developing countries, as methods of garbage collection here leave much to be desired.
The infrastructure in developing countries is in a shambles and the sanitary staff, barely trained. Environmentalists fear these bags could pose major threats in the form of flooding, as they can block the drainage system of mega-metropolis. If washed to the sea, these bags could prove fatal for marine life. Around 100,000 dolphins, turtles, whales and penguins are killed every year due to these plastic bags.
The rampant use of polythene bags poses serious environmental threats, especially in South Asia where people struggle for a decent life style.
Zahid, who was shopping in Aabpara Market said, “Use of these bags should be banned completely.”
A vendor said plastic bags were popular with retailers and consumers because they were cheap, strong, lightweight, functional and a hygienic means of carrying food as well as other goods.
However, this modern convenience that one seems unable to do without, has been responsible for causing pollution, killing wildlife and is using up the earth’s resources.
Jute bags, on the other hand, are most durable than other bags. They so not tear easily and can last for up to five years.
Nadeem Mushtaq, a resident of Islamabad Airport Society, said people need bags which can be used for multiple purposes and should carry sufficient weight.
The government should focus on promoting the use of jute bags as they can carry goods weighing 15-40 kg easily and do not pose a threat to the environment.
If widely used and distributed by the government, jute could be effectively used as a small but effective medium of advertisement in this age of high advertising cost.
Eco-Friendly jute is biodegradable and environmentally friendly compared to plastic.
Plastic bags are banned in several countries. Several developed countries add to problems faced by developing countries when they ship their plastic waste to developing countries like India. Many animals ingest plastic bags, mistaking them for food, and die. These bags remain decomposed even after the death of these animals.
Stakeholders must work out ways to lessen the impact of plastic bags on the environment.
