The Pakistan Cricket Board has demanded a review of the security measures for its women’s team which is slated to participate in the ICC World Cup in Mumbai from January 25.
The PCB today wrote a letter to the ICC asking it to shift matches of the Pakistan team to some other venue.
“Naturally, we are concerned with the security of our players after the unfortunate incident involving our hockey players in Mumbai,” PCB official Nadeem Sarwar reported to have said.
“We have written to the ICC and requested them to review all the security arrangements for our players for the World Cup. We just want to be sure about the safety of our players when they play in the World Cup.
This (relocate matches of the Pakistan team) is entirely up to the ICC and organisers but we have given them this option,” Sarwar added.
Sarwar, however, dismissed speculation that the PCB was thinking of pulling out its team from the World Cup. “Nothing on those lines has been discussed as yet. We are confident the ICC can handle the situation,” he said.
Question mark over Pakistan women team’s participation: BCCI sources said that the board has written a letter to the ICC explaining the ground situation and explained how tough it would be to host the Pakistan women’s team during the World Cup in Mumbai.
BCCI also made it clear to ICC that it’s very keen to host the event in India. “It’s a prestigious event and we would like to host it,” a top BCCI official said.
It will be a tough decision to make as ICC would struggle to shift the venue to some other country at such a short notice. “There is still to decide on the issue. Under the current situation, India hosting Pakistan looks very unlikely,” a source in the know told TOI.
According to sources, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray called up IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla on Tuesday morning and told him that his party would not allow the Pakistan women’s team to play in Mumbai.
The BCCI’s working committee member discussed the issue at length and left it to the ICC to take the final call. Sources said BCCI has suggested a shift in venue for the Pakistan matches to Ahmedabad.
