England batter Beth Morgan has retired from international cricket, following the recurrence of a shoulder injury.
The 31-year-old won the women’s Ashes with England, as well as the World Cup and World Twenty20 double in 2009.
After her debut in 1999, she played in seven Tests, 72 one-day internationals and 28 Twenty20 internationals, the last of which came in October 2011.
“I am proud to have had the opportunity to represent my country and take with me many wonderful memories,” she said.
“I have decided it is the right time for me to retire from international cricket. This was a very tough decision, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my time with the England squad and would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career.
“It has been an honour to play in some truly great teams, alongside some of the best players in the world.” A right-handed batter who also bowled medium-fast right-arm seam, Morgan made her England debut as a 17-year-old against the Netherlands in 1999. She returned to the side in 2003 and was a regular in the side that won the Ashes in 2005, retained them in 2008, and did so again in 2009 when she top-scored with 58.
The Harrow-born player also won the Women’s World Cup in Australia and the Women’s World Twenty20 on home soil in 2009 – playing a starring role in the semi-final win over Australia, hitting 46 not out in an unbroken stand of 122 with Claire Taylor at The Oval.
