The United States Monday reaffirmed its support for Islamabad-New Delhi talks to address cross-Line of Control firing in the disputed Kashmir region, calling discussions the right way to work through the South Asian tensions.
“Our understanding is that the high-level discussions between India and Pakistan continue, to try to work through the violence on the Line of Control, try to re-establish calm and accountability there,” Spokesperson Victoria Nuland said, when the issue was raised at the State Department briefing.
The tensions between Pakistan and India resurfaced last week after years of calm along the Himalayan territory divided between the two countries. Both countries have said two of their soldiers have been killed in cross-LoC firing. “We are continuing, as we have been for the last week, to encourage both sides to talk to each other,” the spokesperson said. “We are pleased to see that they are talking to each other at a high level. We think that is the right way to work it through,” the spokesperson remarked amid reports of fresh firing into Azad Kashmir.
