Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi is planning to visit on Tuesday to consolidate the friendship after Syrian rebels agreed to free 48 Iranian hostages, AFP reported on Monday.

The hostages, claimed by Iran to be religious pilgrims, were freed by rebels last week after more than five months in their custody. The Syrian regime agreed to release more than 2,100 of its prisoners in exchange.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast, confirmed that the visit to Tehran was set to take place on Tuesday.

Iran is one of the last international supporters of the Syrian regime. The Persian state has admitted to funding weapons and sending men to shore up Bashar al-Assad’s government.
