The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has constructed a much-needed pedestrian bridge at the Zero Point on Faisal Avenue, but users have been reluctant to use the facility. Roofed by a red canopy, the bridge has stairs and an almost complete ramp to facilitate bikers. The CDA had awarded the contract of the bridge’s installation to the Heavy Mechanical Complex for Rs 18 million. The bridge lies between two residential sectors, G-7 and G-8, and several government and private offices. It also has massive pedestrian movement that crosses the 10th lane Avenue. Several hit-and-run accidents in the past have claimed lives on this road. However, despite the new facility of an overhead bridge, pedestrians could be seen snaking through busy traffic instead of taking the safer route. Bikers could also be seen taking U-turns from broken medians on the road, instead of using the specified U-turn a few feet away. “Motorcyclists suddenly appear on the road from the median or walkways and we have to immediately swerve our vehicles to avoid hitting them,” said a motorist.
