Ryan Giggs will decide whether to sign another one-year contract with Manchester United at the end of the season, potentially extending his top-flight career into his 40s. The 39-year-old, the most decorated player in Premier League history, has made 16 appearances for United this season in all competitions as Sir Alex Ferguson carefully manages the veteran playmaker.
But he demonstrated he still has the ability to change the course of matches with the long looping pass that set up Robin van Persie’s dramatic late equaliser at West Ham in the 2-2 FA Cup third round draw last week.
Giggs, 12 times a Premier League winner, has signed a succession of one-year deals with United since moving into his mid-30s, and told the Sunday People he will consider signing on again this summer. “I will see how I feel and see how I am contributing, and then I will sit down and talk to the manager,” Giggs said. “I am cool with that. I am enjoying my football at the moment, but the end of the season is a few months away and you never know what will happen.
“I have to contribute as well as enjoying both training and playing.”
Giggs credited Ferguson with managing his fitness to allow him to play on. “In a way I suppose I get an easier ride than some of the younger lads, and that’s because the manager recognises I have different needs at this point,” he said. “But don’t get me wrong, my fitness has to be spot on, otherwise I just couldn’t compete with the rest of the guys either in training or during matches.”
