The Supreme Court on Monday gave three days to the Sindh police to arrest Shahrukh Jatoi, the prime suspect in the murder of Shahzaib Khan, and present him before the court on January 10. Twenty-year-old Shahzeb Khan was gunned down in Karachi on December 25. Five suspects had initially been nominated in the FIR, including Shahrukh Jatoi, his father Sikandar Jatoi, his servant Murtaza Lashari, Siraj Talpur and his brother Sajjad Talpur. Siraj, Sajjad and Lashari have been arrested and are in police custody while the other two are still at large. Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry, while heading a three-member bench, observed that the blame for fleeing Jatoi rested with the police officials for not working efficiently in the case. “If Shahrukh is not arrested, the IG police will have to face legal consequences,” he maintained. Karachi South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shahid Hayat informed the court that there were reports of Shahrukh landing in the UAE, adding that he had travelled with some other name. The CJP said that there was a contradiction in reports regarding Shahrukh’s whereabouts. In the first hearing, it was said that he was in the country, now the court was being told that he did not travel on his passport while the documents submitted by the additional IG said that he was present in the country. During the hearing, Sindh IG Fayyaz Leghari also submitted the progress report of the case. He requested the court for 15 days to arrest Shahrukh Jatoi, but the court rejected the request and gave January 10 deadline to arrest the accused and present him in the court. The police also informed the court that they have acquired the CCTV footage of Shahrukh. Justice Chaudhry said why was not Shahrukh’s father Sikandar Jatoi interrogated when he had claimed that his son was also injured in the quarrel which led to Shahzeb Khan’s murder. The DIG South claimed that Sikandar was lying. Later, the court adjourned the hearing until January 10. Separately, a special anti-terrorism court in Karachi handed over Siraj Talpur and two other accused to the police on a 10-day physical remand. Moreover, the court had also issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Shahrukh Jatoi.
