Sand excavating mafia jeopardises water supply system to Karachi

Water supply system to the city is in jeopardy, said the Karachi water and sewerage board in his request to the home secretary to take action against mafia excavating from areas around water supply installations.
The mafia is excavating sand from the areas near water supply bulk lines, siphons and conduits bringing water to the city from greater Karachi water supply system K-II, K-III and Dumlotte. The lines pass through Dhabeji and reach Karachi via Gharo. These water supply lines are supposed to be under the ground as engineering safety precautions, however, mafia uses heavy dumpers and loaders for the excavation leaving the installations open on the ground and prone to any damage.
In the past, KW&SB MD Misbahuddin Farid had written several letters to home department, IG Sindh, concerned DIG and SSP to take strict action against the mafia so that the theft is stopped once for all. The mafia is active once again despite all the requests in the past.
Moreover, during a high-level meeting attended by Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Minister Local Bodies Agha Siraj Durrani, Health Minsiter Sagheer Ahmed and Raza Haroon issued orders to the commissioner on the request of MD KW&SB Misbahuddin Farid.
The governor directed the commissioner to impose 144 at a 4-5 kilometer radius along the water supply installations.
The KW&SB MD has requested the home secretary once again and asked him to establish police posts around the installations to secure the water supply system and eliminate the sand stealing mafia for good.
