A three member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday heard a review petition filed by Senator Haji Adeel regarding nepotism and flaunting of merit in Sindh police.
The review petition was filed to gauge progress on the SC’s October 2011 ruling to address the worsening law and order milieu of Karachi.
Hyderabad DIG Sannaullah Abbasi and Sindh Additional Inspector General Bashir Memon apprised the court that waseem beater; a constable promoted to the rank of inspector by Sindh IGP Fayyaz Ahmed Laghari was decreeing all transfers and posting of Sindh police, adding that waseem also managed a gambling den in Karachi.
The Sindh Chief Secretary Raja Muhammad Abbas and the IGP pleaded ignorance regarding existence of Waseem beater in front of the bench. However, Hyderabad DIG told the court that he had taken legal punitive action against beater when he served as SSP Sadder . During the course of hearing, a miscellaneous application (CMA) was also filed in the aourt alleging that Waseem was also a smuggler of Iraninan oil and diesel into Pakistan.
Sindh Additional IG addressed the court saying that “I shall not lie despite the fact that my seniors are in attendance and I tell you that Waseem Beater is amongst the ranks of Karachi police and is a very influential person in the department”.
The conflicting statements of Police and DMG personnel irked the Chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who remarked, “why are you concealing the truth and misleading the court? The court lauds the courage of Bashir Memon and Sannaullah Abbasi for unveiling the truth. It has now been realized why the court judgments were not being implemented. If the orders would not be implemented, the court would initiate contempt of court proceedings against IG Fayyaz Laghari. The IGP shall also depoliticize police and all recruitements shall be on merit”.
Justice Azmat Saeed concluded the session by stating “Pakistan is our country and Karachi is its aorta. Please save it”.

Waseem beater had been dismissed a year back, even before the IGP took charge, and plus if I remember correctly from the archives when the said raid on the gambling den was conducted it was the high court that provided a stay order and ordered the issuance of apology to the owners, so I would request the writer to kindly conduct a thorough investigation before forming such staunch opinions and influencing ppl’s opinions as well
Bashir memon and DIG Hyderabad both are PPP favourites.
