Anti-polio campaign kicks off in city

Anti-polio drive resumed on Monday under tight security in different areas of the city including Liaquatabad, Gulberg, North Nazimabad and New Karachi Town. Paramilitary and police support was provided to the polio vaccination teams after a series of deadly attacks on medical workers in the last month of 2012. The current campaign would continue for two days. Deputy Commissioner Central Saif Ur Rehman claimed that strict measures would be put in place for the ongoing polio campaign while strict action would be taken against those who would try to prevent this campaign. United Nations agencies suspended work on a nationwide campaign to inoculate children against the highly infectious disease after nine health workers were murdered in a string of deadly attacks in the northwest region and Karachi in December.
