The Supreme Court directed the Sindh Police on Friday to arrest the killers of Shahzeb Khan within 24 hours otherwise be ready to face the music.
The court also directed the police to submit the charge sheet (challan) of the case at the Registrar’s office on Saturday (today).
A three-judge SC bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Azmat Saeed, heard the murder case. Shahzeb, the only son of his parents, was shot dead on December 25 in Karachi because of a petty argument. During the hearing, the bench showed annoyance over the absence of the Sindh IG and the Sindh advocate general. Sindh Additional IG Muhammad Rafiq was present in the court and so was directed to arrest the killers “or to come to the court on the next date of hearing, January 7, without uniform”.
Rafiq and Additional Advocate General Kasim Mir Jat informed the bench that the Sindh IG and the AG could not come due to the cancellation of their flights.
Referring to a previous case, the chief justice said, “The IG was saved in the last case but tell him he will not be pardoned this time,” adding that he should have appeared in person.
During the course of hearing, a DVD of the interview of Sikandar Jatoi, father of Shahrukh Jatoi, the accused in the case, was also played in the courtroom in the presence of the Sindh police. Sikandar’s interview was recorded by a private TV channel. The father of accused claimed that his son, Shahrukh left the country the night between December 24 and 25. After seeing the interview, the bench observed that the police were reluctant to carry out investigations. The bench remarked that if an anchorperson could approach Sikandar, why had the police failed?
