Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairperson Dr Javaid R Laghari said the HEC would continue to promote extra-curricular activities throughout the country.
He was addressing a ceremony held to celebrate the HEC’s 2nd position in the 32nd National Games recently held at Lahore.
The HEC won second prize with 29 gold medals, 62 silver and 74 bronze medals, with a total 165 medals and 2,935 points during the national event. HEC players performed brilliantly and helped their department gain positions at the event. The HEC chairperson said, “We are very pleased that the HEC team, which includes best sportsmen from universities, has reached new heights of success by securing 2nd position in the 32nd National Games. It is proof that in addition to improvement of the quality of higher education and research, the HEC is also focusing on extra-curricular activities including debates and sports.”
HEC Acting Executive Director Imtiaz Hussain Gilani also lauded the players’ excellent performance. He mentioned that this is a great achievement as the HEC has improved its position from 7th to 2nd in national games.
Since its inception, the HEC has paid special attention to the promotion of healthy activities in university campuses throughout the country. These steps include organising more than 55 inter-varsity championships, special incentives for players and sport officials, performance based scholarships, development of sport facilities in universities and the establishment of 51 fitness centres throughout the country. The establishment of the Pakistan University Sports Board as the largest sports’ setup has also been greatly helpful for the promotion of university sport activities.
