The transporters of Rawalpindi and Islamabad demanded on Thursday an increase in the fares of public transport.
The Twin Cities Transporters Association Chairman Malik Sultan Awan called on District Coordination Officer (DCO) Saqib Zafar and presented the association’s demands.
Awan said if the government did not increase the fares they would be left with no other option but to halt public transport.
“We cannot afford to run transport on these prices. The current fare is not acceptable to us as we hardly save any money at all,” he added.
Awan said the government had failed to take notice of the situation and the transporters were still receiving the old fare which was fixed by the district transport authority after the Supreme Court decreased the prices of CNG.
When contacted, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Saqib Zafar said the transporters were demanding an increase in the fares, but the fares were fixed by the Punjab Transport Authority and only they can decrease them, not the transporters themselves.
