The much-awaited Abbottabad Commission report was presented to Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Thursday, after a lapse of almost one-and-a-half-year, without any official word whether the report would be made public or not.
The five-member commission was formed on June 21, 2011, by then prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani soon after the US SEALs raided al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad.
Excerpts from the 700-page report leaked to the press gave a very different account of the raid than the one given by the US authorities.
The report showed how Bin Laden had advised his family members to pray for safety during the raid. It also detailed the role played by Dr Shakil Afridi in the campaign to hunt down the world’s most wanted man.
The president of the commission, Justice (r) Javed Iqbal led the commission members while submitting the report to the prime minister. “The prime minister praised the efforts and hard work of the chairman and his team in compiling the report,” said a statement.
The praise for the commission’s job might raise some eyebrows as it submitted the report almost 19 months after it was formed, and 20 months after the infamous raid had been carried out by the US special forces.
A row between the Law Ministry and the commission had further delayed the report as the ministry officials had said the report was finalised in October 2012, but could not be submitted to the prime minister because one of the commission’s members, former inspector general of police Abbas Khan, was undergoing heart treatment in the US and was not available to sign it.
The Law Ministry had advised the commission chairman to denotify its ailing member who was undergoing surgery in the US. Khan recently returned home and after the report was signed by him, it was submitted to the prime minister.
The commission has recorded statements of the heads of military and civil intelligence agencies, the military operations director general, Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington, present and former foreign ministers, secretaries and family members of Osama bin Laden.

  2. Justice javid Iqbal has lost his credibility when he was shifted to bahira town rwp during preparation of this report. He is living in neighborhood of many intelligence icons specially those who were active for settling OBL in abbotabad. So this time no one think that hammood rehman will again rebirth in this soil that is why javid Iqbal is kept under intelligence surveillance specially for this report.
