Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday summoned superintendent jail and assistant superintendent jail for the fraudulent release of two convicts in life imprisonment. According to details, LHC issued instructions to Sahiwal Superintendent Central Jail Gulzar Ahmad Butt to conduct an inquiry into the release of two convicts serving life sentence on medical grounds. LHC further ordered Butt to summon Superintendent Jail Kamran Anjum currently posted as principal of Prisons Training Institute Lahore, Deputy Superintendent Jail Shaikh Akram and Assistant Superintendent Muhammad Saleem Gill.
LHC issued these instructions on a writ petition filed by a widow Shamim Ara challenging the release of two prisoners, Zaman and Latif, who had been serving life sentence. She told the court that convicts had been released from prison on the grounds that they had attained the age of over 70 years. She said that according to their national identity cards and jail records, both men had not attained the age in question.
She further claimed that the convicted had secured their release through undue advantage from the medical board.
When contacted, Superintendent Jail Gulzar Ahmad Butt said that he had initiated the probe and summoned the relevant officials. He further said he would submit a report with facts and evidence to the LHC when investigation was completed.
