Five more civilians killed, 17 felons arrested

At least five persons including two police guards were killed in separate incidents of violence at different parts of the metropolis here on Wednesday.
According to police and rescue sources, two brothers were targeted at Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai Road when they were on the way to Karachi University to sit in B. Com examination.
SHO Jan Khan Niazi said that unidentified armed riders sprayed a volley of bullets when the victims, who were identified as twin brothers Jamal Zafar and Haider Latif, sons of Abdul Ghafoor, stationed their car (AHD-392) at a Tyre shop located in the limits of the Kalri Police Station. Resultantly, both brothers sustained bullet wounds while Jamal succumbed to his injuries on the way to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). Doctors at the hospital admitted Haider into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while terming his condition critical.
He said the victims were the residents of Bihar colony and added that the eyewitnesses in their statement revealed that the assailants came on a 125 CC motorcycle from the same street where the victims resided. Replying to a question, he said it was premature to say whether the motive behind the said attack was sectarian or personal enmity. Meanwhile, investigation was underway to ascertain the facts behind the incident. He said the father of the victims was a doctor and employed in Lyari General Hospital. A case 1/13 was registered against unknown attackers.
In another incident, two police guards lost their lives when they offered resistance during a robbery bid near Banaras Bridge in the jurisdiction of the Pirabad Police Station.
SHO Faryad Hussain said the deceased, identified as Rizwan and Naeem, were police guards. He said unidentified armed men intercepted a GPO van to loot it. Meanwhile, these police guards sustained fatal bullet wounds when they offered resistance near Banaras Bridge. No case was registered till the filing of this report.
Meanwhile, a brother of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) member namely Rameez, son of Mohiuddin, was targeted near Usmania Hotel in the limits of the Jamsheed Quarters Police Station.
SHO Inayatullah Marwat said the deceased was the brother of MQM member and might have been killed on political grounds. No case was registered till the filing of this report.
Furthermore, another man was gunned down on a flyover near Habib Bank Chowrangi when he was travelling in his car in the jurisdiction of the SITE-A Police Station. SHO Rao Rafiq said the deceased was identified as Javed Aziz and the motive behind his murder was yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, an alleged bandit was killed while 17 other felons were arrested in separate raids conducted by the security forces of the provincial metropolis.
According to Gulshan police, an alleged looter was killed while his accomplice managed to flee during a police encounter that took place at block 13-D, Gulshan Iqbal Area.
On being informed by a passerby, the police patrolling party rushed to the spot and tried to intercept two alleged bandits riding a motorcycle.
Instead of surrendering themselves, these alleged bandits challenged the police party and opened indiscriminate firing on them with the aim to get an escape route under the cover of heavy fire. In retaliation, one of the bandits got injured while the other managed to flee.
The injured person, who was identified as Imran son of Habib, succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. Gulshan police said the case 2/13 under sections 353 and 324 of Pakistan Penal Code was registered against them.
Meanwhile, Anti Extremist Cell (AEC) of Crime Investigation Department (CID) claimed to have arrested 17 notorious criminals with weapons during raids at Shersha, Maripur, Frontier Colony, Mochko and New Karachi.
The officials said the detained persons were identified as Abdul Hameed, Muhammad Khaliq, Israr Shah, Rehan, Talat, Kashif, Asif, Moiez, Nafees, Yousuf, Muhammad Hafiz, Rizwan, Ghulam Muhammad, Qasim, Shakeel alias Hakla, Mateen and Moin.
They also claimed to have recovered two Kalashnikovs, 11 pistols, five hand grenades, one repeater, two rifles and 10 kilograms of hashish from them.
They said the accused persons during the initial course of investigation confessed to being involved in several heinous crimes including murders, police encounters, robberies and others. Cases in this regard were registered against the nabbed criminals and a probe had been initiated to enable the arrests of the other accomplices.
