Residents on Monday night celebrated the New Year with enthusiasm despite the freezing temperature, looming terror threats, shortage of petrol and inflation, under strict police security. From private parties to impromptu celebrations on main roads, the city had it all. Using the occasion as a perfect opportunity to let their hair down and enjoy, residents of Islamabad went all out. A number of private parties and dinners were organised in the city. Fashion trends this year seemed to be padded shoulder tops, with drapes, flowers and broaches on the shoulders.
The police measured the strict security arrangement for the celebration. Law enforcement personnel were also deployed in and around green belts, while Frontier Constabulary personnel were charged with securing important government buildings and hilly areas of the capital. While New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, the city’s police were busy warning people of strict action if anyone was found using motorcycles without a silencer. The traffic police had chalked out a comprehensive plan for the city to control the heavy traffic flow, but that did not deter young men, who still went to mechanics to remove silencers from their motorcycles. The tight security, political confrontation, terrorism, economic and financial hardship and lack of CNG and petrol could not stop ‘Islooites’ from celebrating and wishing each other a Happy New Year.
