Sale of cough syrup banned in Islamabad


In order to avoid the tragedy of deaths due to poisonous cough syrup, the administration on Monday imposed a ban on the sale of dextrometharphan in the federal capital. Drug Inspector Sardar Shabir Ahmed said as a result of deaths in Punjab, the Islamabad health department has imposed a ban on the use and sale of local cough preparations containing dextrometharphan, with immediate effect till further orders. He said all hospitals, distributors and chemists had been informed about the strict implementation of these directions and strict action would be taken against violators. All patients who had recently died in Lahore and Gujranwala due to cough syrup had consumed preparations containing dextromethorphan.
