A nine-member group of MNAs is pushing to substitute capital punishment with life imprisonment for culprits involved in incidents of acid throwing. Recently, the group tabled the “Acid Throwing and Burn Bill 2012” in the National Assembly that initially proposed a death penalty for the crime. Later, efforts were made to replace the punishment with life imprisonment on grounds that the PPP was in favour of abolishing execution. The bill has once again been forwarded to the Standing Committee for further review.
