‘WRAP’s Fire Safety Training Course’ held at PHMA House the other day.
Conducted by Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), in collaboration with Accordia Global Compliance Group, this was the first time when an international training course addressing the crucial industrial needs of fire safety and risk assessment was organised in Pakistan by WRAP.
Tailored to the specific risks and fire safety legislation in Pakistan, the course covered aspects related with fire safety & protection, fire spread and combustion, routine fire prevention measures, effective response during fire, risk assessment, coupled with workable models of evacuation, including fire drills and pre-planning etc. Offering ‘international expertise with local experience’, the course also focused on fire safety laws in Pakistan and conducted practical fire-fighting sessions well. This international fire safety course also introduced an internationally-practiced ‘5 Steps Risk Assessment Process’.
Saifullah Khawaja, Director of WRAP’s Bangladesh Liaison Office, was the lead trainer in the course. The participants were informed that there are common causes of fire that include electrical equipment failure, careless smoking, incorrect storage or handling of flammable substances, arson, accumulation of rubbish and combustible materials, including those of the flammable materials left close to the source of heat. “Smoke is the biggest killer during fire incidents. If employees are trapped in a smoke-filled room they should try to keep themselves as low as possible, and they must only climb out of an upstairs window as a last resort”, Khawaja explained.
WRAP’s President and CEO, Avedis Seferian, also spoke on the occasion from US through webinar arrangements. Talking to the course participants, Seferian said that human life is most important than anything else, thus workers’ safety must always be taken beyond any cost. “Working in any manufacturing and industrial unit, staff must be able to control the fire, which can only be done through exclusive training along with practical drills. Factory workers must be well-trained and fully-aware about the fire safety needs, including all precautions and preventive measures to the level that no major or minor fire incident may ever occur in the workplace”, Mr. Avedis Seferian said. Addressing to the course participants, Mr. Inam al Rehman Country Head Accordia Global Compliance Group Pakistan highlighted the need of modern fire safety methods in the local industries.
