Attacks on polio workers continue in Pakistan as three teams were attacked in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Two health worker sustained bullet injuries on Wednesday.
According to police, first incident occurred in Khazana area of Peshawar when unknown person riding on a motorcycle opened fire on the health worker.
Deputy Director EPI Dr Jan Khan Afridi said that the injured woman had been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital and is being treated.
Second attack was carried out at Bukhram Kallay area of Charsadda where another campaigner was shot who was shifted to a nearby hospital.
In Charsadda, unknown miscreants riding bikes opened fire on anti-polio team, however no casualty was reported in this attack.
On Tuesday, Four women were killed in less than an hour in seemingly coordinated attacks in Karachi, a day after a man working on a local government-World Health Organization (WHO) project was also shot dead in the city, police said.
A sixth worker, also a woman, was killed on Tuesday in Peshawar, which lies close to the tribal areas, a haven for the Taliban and other militants who ordered a ban on polio vaccinations in June.
The WHO and UNICEF condemned the attacks and expressed their commitment to supporting Pakistan in its efforts to rid the country of polio and other diseases, while the United Nations called the killings “senseless and inexcusable”.
Pakistan is one of only three countries where polio remains endemic, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria, but efforts to tackle the highly infectious crippling disease have been hampered over the years by local suspicion.

  1. The elite are killing the future of our people, this polio vaccination contains mercury and other chemicals that will impair some children in the future.

  2. Sheikh Tantawi, vowing to ban it in Al-Azhar scohlos. After the girl complied he insisted she should not wear it any more. I tell you again that the niqab has nothing to do with Islam and it is only a mere custom. I understand the religion better than you and your parents. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar imam vowed to issue a ban against the face-veil in all scohlos linked to Al-Azhar.
