The consumption of poultry items in the twin cities increased considerably following the drop in temperature leading to an unprecedented hike in the prices of eggs and chicken.
The current retail price of a dozen eggs was currently Rs 130 as compared to Rs 60 to 65 in the summer season. Likewise, a kilogramme of chicken was now costing Rs 200 while its price fluctuated between Rs 110 and 120 a few weeks ago.
Many customers have asked the authorities concerned to take stern action against retailers who were involved in overcharging. “Negligence on the part of the authorities concerned encourages traders and retailers to charge customers at will,” said a customer named Qureshi.
“The recent increase in prices of eggs and chicken is attributed to the increase in their demand because of the weather,” said Fahad, a shopkeeper.
Citizens have requested the authorities concerned to fix prices and ensure proper monitoring.
