People throw support behind Malik’s mobile ban

A recent poll shows that majority of Pakistanis supported Rehman Malik’s decision to block mobile phone services during Muharram.

According to a Gilani Research Foundation survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan, a majority (68%) supported the government’s action to block mobile phone service on 9th and 10th Muharram.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked, “Keeping in mind the security situation, mobile networks were blocked by the government during Muharram. To what extent do you support the government’s decision to block mobile networks?” Responding to this, 33% strongly supported the government’s decision, 35% somewhat supported it, 21% somewhat opposed it while 10% strongly opposed it. 1% did not give a view.

The poll’s findings are in line with other survey results compiled by Gilani Research Foundation, where public opinion has been generally supportive of the current government’s decisions regarding law and order and anti-terrorism measures.

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out amongst a sample of 2,632 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country during December 3 to December 8, 2012.
